GTM stands for go to market. A GTM role is any seat that owns part of finding, winning, or keeping paying customers.
A GTM role, short for go to market, is any job that owns part of getting a product in front of buyers and converting that into revenue. It spans four functions: sales, which is sales development, account executives and sales engineering; marketing, which is demand generation, product marketing, content and growth; customer success and account management; and revenue operations, the systems and data layer underneath all of it.
The test for whether a seat is a GTM role is simple. If it is measured by pipeline, bookings, retention, or by the systems that produce those numbers, it is go to market. Engineering, product and finance are not GTM roles even though they support revenue. The term spread because the old split between sales and marketing stopped describing how software companies actually sell, and because the functions increasingly share one number and one system of record. A newer seat, the GTM engineer, sits between revenue operations and software engineering, and hiring for it has roughly doubled year over year for two straight years.
Eight seats cover almost every go to market team in software. Two create pipeline, two close and keep revenue, two shape the market, and two build the machine underneath.
Creates and qualifies pipeline through outbound and inbound follow-up. Usually the first GTM hire after the founder. See what we screen for in an SDR.
Owns the deal from qualified opportunity to signature and carries the quota that the company is actually measured on. See the AE profile.
Owns retention, adoption and expansion after the sale. In a subscription business this seat protects more revenue than any single closer wins. See the CSM profile.
Owns the CRM, the data, the routing, forecasting and the compensation plans. Without it, nobody agrees on what the pipeline number means. See the RevOps profile.
Owns the paid and organic programs that produce inbound volume, and the cost of it. See the demand gen profile.
Owns positioning, messaging, pricing input, launches and the sales narrative. The seat that decides what the whole team says. See the PMM profile.
Owns technical validation inside the deal: demos, proofs of concept, security review. Appears once deals get technical enough to stall without one. See the SE profile.
The newest seat. Builds the automation, enrichment and integrations that the revenue team runs on, writing code rather than filing tickets. See the GTM engineer profile.
A GTM team is the group of those seats operating against one revenue number. Its shape is set by stage, not by preference: you add the seat that removes the current bottleneck, and adding it early is the most common way small companies waste money.
| Stage | Typical GTM team | The bottleneck it solves |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-seed to seed | Founder sells, plus one sales development rep | Nobody knows the motion yet, so the founder has to stay in the deals |
| Seed to Series A | Two SDRs, one or two account executives, one demand generation marketer | Pipeline volume, and getting the founder out of every call |
| Series A to Series B | Add customer success, revenue operations, product marketing, often a sales engineer | Renewals arriving, forecast nobody trusts, deals stalling on technical review |
| Series B and beyond | Add sales leadership, enablement, GTM engineering, segment specialisation | Onboarding new reps fast enough, and a stack that has outgrown manual work |
The most expensive sequencing mistake is hiring a sales leader to fix a motion nobody has proved yet. Below roughly five sellers, the person who owns the number should still be in deals.
It is not different, it is broader. Sales and marketing roles are both GTM roles. Go to market is the umbrella term, not a synonym for either one, and what it adds is the assumption that the functions share a number instead of trading leads over a wall.
Practically, calling a seat a GTM role signals three things about how it is run. Pipeline is one funnel with shared definitions rather than a marketing funnel that ends where the sales funnel starts. Compensation and targets are set against the same revenue outcome. And the tooling is one connected stack, which is exactly why revenue operations and the GTM engineer exist as distinct seats now. If your marketing team reports on leads and your sales team reports on opportunities and the two numbers never reconcile, you have sales and marketing departments, not a go to market team.
In the United States, a go to market seat runs from roughly $95,000 on target for a sales development rep to over $200,000 for an account executive. In India, the same seats run about a fifth to a quarter of that, which is why so many US-facing GTM teams now sit there.
| GTM role | United States, annual on target | India, annual all in |
|---|---|---|
| Sales development rep | $90,000 to $105,000 in major metros | $8,000 to $18,000 (7 lakh to 15 lakh) |
| Account executive | About $205,000 median in New York | $22,000 to $42,000 (18 lakh to 35 lakh) |
| Customer success manager | $90,000 to $130,000 | $12,000 to $24,000 (10 lakh to 20 lakh) |
| Revenue operations | $105,000 to $190,000 by level | $13,000 to $30,000 (11 lakh to 25 lakh) |
GTM engineer pay is the noisiest of the set because the title is new and the postings range from low to high six figures in the US. If you are in India and weighing one of these paths, the ladder and the numbers are in GTM jobs in India and sales careers in India for the US market.
Hire against the bottleneck you can name today. If you cannot name it, the answer is almost always pipeline, which means a sales development rep, not a head of sales.
Hire a sales development rep. Hire two if you can, because a single rep gives you no way to tell whether a miss is the person or the message.
Hire an account executive. The trigger is qualified pipeline sitting untouched, not a revenue target you would like to hit.
Hire a sales engineer before hiring another closer. A second AE will stall in the same place the first one did.
Hire customer success a quarter early. Churn in business software is quiet and late, and a save motion after the fact costs far more.
Hire revenue operations. This is usually the seat companies add a year later than they should.
Hiring for one of these seats is a different search from a generalist one, because the screen is buyer, motion and attainment rather than keywords. That is the whole argument for using a GTM recruiter instead of a generalist agency.
Tell us the role and the buyer. We come back with 2 to 3 vetted, currently-employed operators in India, usually within a week to a week and a half. Contingency, so there is no cost until you hire.
Go to market. A GTM role is a job that owns part of getting a product to buyers and turning that into revenue, across sales, marketing, customer success and revenue operations.
No. Sales roles are GTM roles, but so are marketing, customer success and revenue operations. GTM is the umbrella term for every function measured against the revenue number.
The group of go to market seats operating against one revenue number and one system of record. At seed stage it is often a founder, two sales development reps and a demand generation marketer. By Series B it usually includes customer success, revenue operations, product marketing and sales leadership.
Yes. It sits between revenue operations and software engineering, building the automation and integrations the revenue team runs on. Hiring has roughly doubled year over year for two straight years, and research from Clay and The Signal found that 54 percent of the fastest growing business software companies have one.
Not for most of them. Sales development, account executive and customer success roles are commercial. Revenue operations and GTM engineering are technical, and sales engineering sits in between.
It is one of the better paying commercial paths in India, especially at companies selling into the United States, where an account executive can earn 18 lakh to 35 lakh and more at the enterprise end. Those roles concentrate at Indian software companies selling abroad and at the India arms of US firms.
